Sunday Psalm: He Leads Us Along

Psalm 95

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and extol him with music and song.

For the Lord is the great God,
    the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us bow down in worship,
    let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
    as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

Heavenly Father,

We praise You this morning for You are the Lord of lords, and the King of all kings. Our hearts are humble before You as we recognize how small we are in the grand scheme of things; how fleeting is our time on earth in the span of eternity. Yet, we are Your children, and You have given each of us a purpose in this life. How we respond to Your calling is our own choice, for You have given us free will to make our own decisions about You, and about life.

For those of us who call You “Lord,” You watch over us with the tender care of a shepherd watching over his flock of sheep.

Sometimes we are resting in the green pastures, quietly feeding on Your Word and fellowshipping with other believers;

Sometimes the way is rocky, and we need Your steady hand to keep us from slipping into situations where our hearts will be broken;

Sometimes You lead us through the deep water, where the current tries to carry us away, but You are there, to make sure we keep from drowning in the stress of our circumstances.

When it is dark around and in us, Your love lights the way. Often that light comes in the presence of another person who has been where we are and can support us as we come out of the shadows.

May we be that light for those we see suffering alone. May we support those who are weak. May we encourage those who are faithful and haven’t seen the answers to their prayers. May we join our hearts in prayer with them.

May we not judge one another’s faith, but recognize that we all are on different journeys in life.

Each sheep in a flock is different, and You recognize each of us as unique. You have equipped us all with different gifts. You alone can see the whole picture, as to where and when You will fulfill Your purpose in our lives.

We trust in You as our Shepherd to lead us to a life of peace beyond our understanding, joy without measure, and love that is eternal.
